52 MW solar plant project to be developed in Ivory Coast

A 52 MW photovoltaic solar power plant is set to be constructed in Ivory Coast. This follows a concession agreement inked between the country’s government and PFO Africa.

The 25-year agreement covers the design, financing, construction, operation and transfer of the solar plant. The project will be developed within the Ferkessédougou division. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2024, with the plant becoming operational by the end of 2025.

Benefits

This will be the largest solar power plant construction project in Cote d’Ivoire implemented by an Ivorian independent power producer. The electricity produced by the solar power plant will be fed into Ivory Coast’s national grid for a period of 25 years.

The special-purpose company Ferké Solar, established by PFO Africa for this project, will invest a sum of US $64M. The project is expected to create 150 direct jobs during the construction phase and 15 permanent direct jobs during the operating phase.

Ivory Coast currently has an installed capacity of 2,907 MW, with 30% coming from renewable sources. The government’s strategy aims to deploy 600 MW of solar capacity by 2026 and diversify the electricity mix, with the inauguration of its first 37.5 MWp solar power plant in Boundiali. The Boundiali solar power plant, equipped with a battery storage system, mainly supplies electricity to Boundiali, benefiting at least 30,000 households.
