ACWA Power to construct 2GW onshore wind in Egypt

ACWA Power has announced plans to construct a 2GW onshore wind project in Egypt. The move follows a long term deal spanning pans 25 years sealed with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for large-scale project.

Once completed, this project will be Egypt’s largest wind farm, surpassing ACWA Power’s 1.1GW wind project in Suez. It will also become the country’s largest independent power producer (IPP) operating as a single asset.

This initiative strengthens ACWA Power’s position as the leading renewable energy developer in Egypt and Africa, with the company’s total investments in the region reaching US $8.8Bn and a combined capacity of 4.8GW across various projects.

Financial closure for the wind farm is anticipated by 2026, aligning with Egypt’s target to increase renewable energy’s share in electricity generation to 42% by 2030. Additionally, the project is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 3.5 million tonnes annually, supporting Egypt’s environmental and climate goals.

ACWA Power’s chairman, Mohammad Abunayyan, emphasized that this partnership reinforces the company’s strong relationship with the Egyptian government and contributes to the nation’s sustainable energy transition.

The company has been active in Egypt since 2015 and currently operates two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants: a 120MW facility in Benban and a 200MW project in Kom Ombo. Furthermore, ACWA Power is expanding its presence in Egypt’s green energy sector, having signed a $4 billion framework agreement in December 2023 for a green hydrogen project in collaboration with key Egyptian authorities.
