Akwa Group to develop oil storage project in Senegal

The Akwa Group, a leading Moroccan private enterprise in the energy and petroleum distribution sector, has initiated a strategic oil storage project in Senegal.

This project aims to transform energy distribution in West Africa. It comes at a crucial time for Senegal, which has recently become an oil-producing country following the development of its Sangomar field.

The development will be set up in Bargny-Sendou, about 30 kilometers from Dakar. It will also feature natural gas processing capabilities. Akwa Group’s investment in Senegal marks an important step in its broader expansion strategy across francophone Africa.

With previous operations in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon, the company aims to strengthen its regional presence by capitalizing on its extensive experience in petroleum and gas logistics. The new project will also contribute to enhancing Senegal’s energy infrastructure, supporting its ambitions to become a key player in the regional oil and gas industry.

The growing influence of Moroccan businesses across Africa is reflected in the 2025 edition of the “500 African Business Champions” ranking by Jeune Afrique. The list includes 54 Moroccan companies—39 of which are privately owned—with a combined turnover of $55.9 billion. This performance underscores the success of Morocco’s pan-African expansion strategy, led by top-performing entities such as OCP Group, Royal Air Maroc, leading banks, and subsidiaries of Maroc Telecom.

Beyond the energy sector, Moroccan companies are also making their mark in construction, industry, commerce, and other key sectors across the continent. This continued economic engagement is bolstering Morocco’s regional influence and establishing it as a major economic force within Africa.
