Austrian industrial engineering group Andritz AG has secured a substantial contract to carry out the rehabilitation of Mozambique’s largest hydropower facility, the 2,075-MW Cahora Bassa Hydropower Plant (HPP), located on the Zambezi River.
Awarded by Mozambique’s state-run power producer, Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the contract is valued in the mid-three-digit million-euro range and was officially included in Andritz’s order intake for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Cahora Bassa Hydropower Plant
The project, dubbed REABSUL II, seeks to boost the plant’s operational performance by enhancing efficiency, reliability, availability, and maintainability. A key component of the upgrade involves increasing the capacity of each turbine by more than 4%, raising individual unit output to 433 MW.
As part of the agreement, Andritz will deliver five 480 MVA generators, five new Francis turbine runners, as well as advanced control and protection systems and hydromechanical equipment. The company will also handle the full scope of project implementation, covering design, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning at the site.
Operational since 1975, the Cahora Bassa HPP is a cornerstone of Mozambique’s energy infrastructure, generating more than half of the country’s electricity and supplying power to several neighbouring states. The rehabilitation project is expected to extend the lifespan of the facility while strengthening regional energy stability.
