Afripower kicks off construction of utility-scale solar project in Madagascar

Afripower has launched construction of a utility-scale solar project in Madagascar, marking a significant step in the country’s shift toward cleaner energy.

The new solar facility will be developed alongside Afripower’s existing Mandroseza heavy fuel oil (HFO) power plant and is designed to reach a total installed capacity of 40 MWp once fully completed. The project to be set up in Moramanga, will have an initial phase that will add about 15 MWp to the national grid, with further phases planned to progressively increase output.

Energy security objectives

Afripower is one of the main electricity producers supplying Madagascar’s Antananarivo Interconnected Network. By integrating solar generation with its current thermal operations, Afripower aims to cut dependence on imported fuel, reduce electricity production costs, and improve the reliability of power supply. The hybrid approach is expected to provide greater stability to the grid while supporting Madagascar’s long-term energy security objectives.

Company representatives say the project aligns with national efforts to expand renewable energy and lower carbon emissions. Afripower noted that the solar plant will play an important role in reducing emissions associated with the Mandroseza HFO facility while strengthening overall grid resilience.

Construction work is already in progress, and the first phase of the solar plant is scheduled to enter operation in early 2026. Once fully developed, the project is expected to boost generation capacity, support economic growth, and contribute to Madagascar’s environmental and climate goals. The Moramanga solar initiative underscores the country’s increasing focus on renewable energy infrastructure and highlights Afripower’s role in advancing sustainable power solutions in Madagascar.
