Cameroon seeks contractor for Kikot-Mbébé hydropower project

Cameroon is seeking contractors for the Kikot-Mbébé hydropower project. Kikot-Mbébé Hydro Power Company (KHPC) initiated the first step of a two-phase procurement process for the selection of the contractors.

The Kikot‐Mbébé hydropower project is a flagship initiative being developed under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) between France’s EDF and the Government of Cameroon through Kikot-Mbébé Hydro Power Company (KHPC). The project aims to significantly boost Cameroon’s low-cost, renewable electricity generation in line with its National Development Strategy 2020–2030.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with operations expected to commence by 2030. The overall project cost is estimated at over US $1bn, with financial support anticipated from partners such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and other development agencies.

Application process

The procurement process will see the first lot covering the dam’s construction and hydro-mechanical equipment. Lot 2 (Electromechanical Works) involves the supply and installation of power plant equipment along with supporting civil engineering and Lot 3 encompasses the construction of a 400 kV evacuation line, switchyard, and grid connections.

Interested companies (national and international firms not subject to sanctions by the Cameroonian government, the World Bank, or IFC) must email their expression of interest to the provided addresses. After signing a Confidentiality Agreement, applicants will be given access to the selection documents via the iDeals virtual platform. The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2025.

Companies that pass this initial evaluation will be invited to participate in the formal tender process, which is expected to start between August and September 2025. A virtual information session is scheduled for 12 February 2025. This session, aimed at clarifying the selection process and answering queries, will be recorded and made available on KHPC’s website.
