The Government of Chad has launched an invitation for bids for the construction of two additional facilities at the Kariari Dam. The Ministry of Water and Sanitation initiated the tender for the project to be located 65 km southeast of the city of Amdjarass.
The two facilities include a raw water pumping station and a drinking water treatment plant. The deadline for interested companies to submit their applications is July 27, 2023. The Kariari Dam has a storage capacity of 12 million m3 and is intended to be used to provide drinking water to the surrounding areas of Amdjarass in the province of Ennedi-Est. This region has the lowest rate of water access in Central Africa, with only 11% of the population having access to clean water, according to UNICEF.

Objective
In addition to constructing the pumping and treatment plants, the winning company will also be responsible for building the raw water and drinking water transport networks, as well as a distribution network for the drinking water. The government of Chad will finance the construction of these facilities using its own funds. The ultimate goal is to increase the country’s drinking water coverage to 100% by 2030, compared to the 53% coverage in 2021, as reported by the African Development Bank.
The announcement of this call for tenders comes approximately two years after the project to utilize the Kariari Dam for drinking water supply was first announced on August 21, 2021. This project will not only enhance access to clean water but also improve sanitation and hygiene services in the area.
