Chad receives US $37M for semi-urban water supply and sanitation program

Chad has received a sum of US $37M to aid in the second phase of the semi-urban and rural drinking water supply and sanitation program.

The project which aligns with the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG6), aims to achieve universal access to water and sanitation services, which is crucial for improving public health and overall well-being.

Access to drinking water and sanitation

The funds which were received from the African Development Bank will aid in the construction of 23 boreholes for the supply of drinking water, the construction of 225 boreholes equipped with human-powered pumps, and the construction of 50 water production units and 54 solar or thermal mini-water supply systems.

In the area of sanitation, the funds will be used to set up 500 three-stall flush toilets equipped with hand-washing facilities. 20 refuse bins will also be installed in schools, health centers, bus stations, and markets. Additionally seven large-diameter agricultural boreholes will be developed up for small-scale irrigation “for women’s groups”.

Provinces of Ennedi, Mandoul, Moyen Chari, Mayo Kebbi East, Mayo Kebbi West, Salamat and Sila are among the project’s beneficiaries. The town of Amdjarass in the Ennedi province is identified as the first beneficiary, emphasizing the urgency in addressing water-borne diseases in the region. The disparities in access to drinking water and sanitation services in Chad, with rates of 63% and 30%, respectively, underscore the significance of such interventions to improve these essential services for the population.
