Construction has begun on Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Train 7 project at Bonny Island in the Niger Delta. President Muhammadu Buhari launched the project to mark the start of works.
The NLNG Train 7 Project consists of the construction of one complete LNG train and one additional liquefaction unit with a total capacity of approximately eight (8) MTPA, plus other extensive associated utilities and infrastructures; (an 84,200m³ storage tank, a 36,000m³ condensate tank, and three gas turbine generators) at the Bonny Island LNG facility
The project is being spearheaded by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), a joint venture between the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and international oil majors Royal Dutch Shell, ENI, and Total.

Increase in NLNG’s production
NLNG took the Final Investment Decision (FID) in December 2019, which was followed by the approval of the Nigerian Content Compliance Certificate (NCCC) and Approved Vendors Lists (AVLs) by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in April last year.
In May 2020, NLNG awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contracts for the project to SCD JV Consortium, comprising affiliates of Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo, a step that triggered the commencement of the Detail Design and Construction phase of the Project.
The project is anticipated to create more than 12,000 new jobs and as many as 40,000 indirect jobs during the construction stage, and will attract $12 billion in new investment in Nigeria, the statement said. Upon completion, it is expected to increase NLNG’s production by 35% to 30 million tons a year.
”As we flag off the Train 7 project today, I look forward to the development and execution of more gas projects by the International Oil Companies (IOCs) and indigenous operators, and more Trains from NLNG to harness the over 600 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves we are endowed with,” said President Buhari.
