Construction of Azemmour wastewater treatment plant in Morocco underway

Construction works on the Azemmour wastewater treatment plant in Morocco is underway. The Intercommunal Autonomous Authority for the Distribution of Water, Electricity and Liquid Sanitation Management in the Provinces of El Jadida and Sidi Bennour (RADEEJ) made the announcement.

The Azemmour wastewater treatment plant project is part of the National Liquid Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment Program (PNA) that was launched back in 2005. The program aims to rehabilitate and extend Morocco’s sewage network, connect and strengthen the stormwater network and build treatment plants_with primary, secondary and tertiary treatment capacity_in a total of 330 cities and urban centers with more than 10 million inhabitants by 2030.

The treatment plant project covers an area of ​​5 hectares and it will be implemented within a span of 24 months.  According to the management, necessary studies of the master plan for liquid restoration for the city of Azemmour and the center of Sidi Ali Benhamdouch have been completed; a detailed pre-planning of the station has also been completed.

The project implementation tender has been advertised, all work of the award committee, which consists in opening up the offers of the competitors, and the evaluation of the technical documents and offers of the bidders have also been completed.

The water project is estimated to cost US$ 39M and upon completion, the facility will treat approximately 7,500 cubic meters of wastewater daily, using the activated sludge treatment technique before its release into the natural environment or its reuse for the irrigation of green spaces in the city of Azemmour, the northeast region of El Jadida, and the urban center of Mazagan.

Similarly, the sludge will be treated before its transport to the controlled public landfill, in addition to the treatment of odors owing to the latest deodorization technologies used in this field.
