Egypt to develop first wind turbine factory

Egypt is set to establish the country’s first wind turbine manufacturing facility alongside launching a 2,000MW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing of a memorandum of understanding ceremony for the factory project, describing the initiatives as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen energy security, promote clean energy technologies, and accelerate the country’s green transition.

The projects will be developed through a partnership involving Chinese wind turbine manufacturer SANY, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority. Officials said the collaboration is designed to localize advanced wind energy technology, increase domestic manufacturing capacity, and position Egypt as a regional supplier of renewable energy equipment for markets across the Middle East and Africa.

Production goal

According to the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the planned factory will have an annual production capacity of up to two gigawatts of wind turbines. Construction is expected to be completed within two years after the final agreements are signed. In parallel, the 2,000-MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez is scheduled to be connected to Egypt’s national electricity grid within 23 months, adding significant renewable generation capacity to the country’s power system.

Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the entire initiative will be financed in Egyptian pounds, supporting the government’s efforts to reduce reliance on foreign currency while encouraging greater use of local resources in strategic infrastructure projects. Madbouly noted that renewable energy developments continue to receive close oversight from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, emphasizing that local manufacturing of clean energy technologies has become a central pillar of Egypt’s long-term economic and energy strategy. He added that the government is also investing in energy storage systems to improve grid reliability and maximize the benefits of renewable power generation. The latest projects support Egypt’s target of increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 45 percent over the coming years, while strengthening the country’s ambitions to become a regional hub for clean energy production and manufacturing.
