Libya commissions first-ever 1 MW solar power plant in Kufra

Libya has successfully completed and commissioned the country’s first-ever 1 MW solar power plant. The facility, located in Kufra, was delivered ahead of schedule.

The project, which commenced following a signed agreement on September 24, 2024, was implemented in partnership with Lamsa Company for General Contracting and Real Estate Investment, which served as the main contractor. Designed with a peak capacity of 1.14 MWp, the solar plant is expected to generate approximately 2,182 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually.

Goal to clean energy

This output will directly serve the energy needs of the Al-Jouf Free Zone, displacing an estimated 545,000 liters of diesel each year and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 1,300 tons marking a significant contribution to Libya’s environmental and energy diversification goals.

The plant is fully operated by a team of locally trained engineers employed by Infinity Libya, a subsidiary of Infinity Group underscoring the company’s focus on developing local talent and building technical capacity within the country’s renewable energy sector.

Infinity Co-founder and Chairman Mohamed Ismail Mansour hailed the project as a pivotal moment for Libya’s clean energy journey, crediting strong partnerships and local expertise for the successful delivery.

Fahd Benhalim, Managing Director of Infinity Libya, emphasized the plant’s role in reducing fossil fuel dependence while setting the stage for broader renewable integration across Libya’s key economic sectors. The completion of the Kufra solar power plant signals the beginning of a new era in Libya’s energy landscape and provides a blueprint for future sustainable energy projects nationwide.
