Morocco, Mauritania ink renewable energy deal

The governments of Morocco and Mauritania have finalized a deal set to boost clean energy for both countries.

Morocco’s Minister of Energy Leila Benali and her Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Khaled inked the deal that will see knowledge exchange in energy security and network management is prioritized. This initiative aligns with the directives of King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to deepen bilateral cooperation across all sectors.

Under the deal, there are plans to establish an electrical interconnection project to stabilize networks and enhance electricity supply. This demonstrates forward-thinking collaboration in infrastructure. The improved energy security and infrastructure could attract investment and foster economic stability in both countries.

Energy network

Morocco has a strong focus on renewable energy, aiming to generate over 50% of its electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind by 2030, with the “Noor Ouarzazate” solar complex being a key component of this ambitious strategy, positioning the country as a leader in renewable energy development within the region

Mauritania on the other hand has significant potential for renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, due to its vast desert landscape and strong coastal winds, allowing it to generate a large portion of its electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind farms, with plans to further expand its capacity through projects like hybrid power plants combining solar and other sources; this is considered a key strategy for the country to achieve sustainable energy access and economic development.

This partnership could pave the way for a broader renewable energy network in North and West Africa, contributing to sustainable development goals and reducing reliance on non-renewable resources.
