Global water technology leader Wilo Group marked a major milestone last week as it celebrated 10 years of operations in Ethiopia, a decade defined by innovation, sustainability, and a deep commitment to improving water access and infrastructure in the region. The milestone was commemorated with a lively and heartfelt celebration in Addis Ababa, attended by industry leaders, development partners, government officials, and regional stakeholders.
The event was masterfully moderated by Christine Amira, Marketing & Sustainability Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Wilo, who brought both humor and heart to the occasion. Opening with a light-hearted Ethiopian alias, “My name is Askalé Mariam,” she charmed the audience and set the tone for an evening that was as reflective as it was celebratory.
A Decade of Sustainable Progress
Over the past 10 years, Wilo Group has established itself as a key player in Ethiopia’s water and wastewater sector, providing cutting-edge pump systems and engineering solutions tailored to local needs. From supporting clean water projects in remote areas to partnering with government and private sector institutions, the company’s impact has gone beyond business to touch lives across communities.
“Wilo’s journey in Ethiopia is a story of collaboration,” said Belete A. Matebe, Wilo Group’s Country Manager for Ethiopia. “We didn’t just come to sell products. We came to understand the local context, build lasting relationships, and create sustainable solutions that are truly made for Africa.”
The celebration highlighted Wilo’s broad contributions to urban water management, irrigation systems, and industrial pumping solutions, with a special focus on sustainability and energy efficiency—two values at the core of the company’s global vision.
Engineering the Future of Water
As the world continues to face the realities of climate change, water scarcity, and infrastructure challenges, Wilo Group’s presence in Ethiopia reflects its long-term investment in climate-smart engineering. During the event, speakers underscored the company’s role in supporting Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) while also empowering local talent through training and knowledge-sharing.
Christine Amira noted:
“This celebration is not just about looking back—it’s about moving forward with purpose. We are here to stay. We are here to listen. We are here to co-create solutions that make a difference.”
She emphasized the importance of building bridges between people and purpose, stating that moderating the event was more than managing the microphone—it was about “weaving story, culture, and sustainability into a single, intentional moment.”
Honoring Partnerships & People
The event also served as a tribute to Wilo’s valued clients, partners, and colleagues who have walked alongside the company over the last decade. Testimonials from project collaborators, water utility authorities, and engineers illuminated the tangible results of Wilo’s presence—improved access to clean water, reduced system downtime, and the adoption of smarter technologies across Ethiopia.
Among the highlights were awards presented to long-standing partners and a visual showcase of key projects delivered by Wilo over the last decade. A particularly special tribute was paid to key partners—consultants, contractors, and engineers—who have played a pivotal role in shaping Wilo’s success in Ethiopia over the past 10 years.
Keynote Highlights and Strategic Partnerships
Belete Matebe, Managing Director of Wilo East Africa, delivered a powerful keynote address that reflected on a decade of progress—from building local teams and technical partnerships to deploying energy-efficient pumping systems across Water Management, Building Services, and Industry sectors.
Tariku Amare, Country Manager of the Wilo Representative Office in Ethiopia, was also recognized for his vital contributions in deepening Wilo’s local engagement and operational presence.
The event featured a showcase of over 100 projects completed in the past decade, demonstrating Wilo’s tangible impact on Ethiopia’s water sector.
A major announcement during the evening was the signing of a Strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)—marking a Strategic Alliance for Energy Efficiency. This agreement is a bold step forward in Wilo’s journey of sustainability, innovation, and regional collaboration.
A Night to Remember
As music, laughter, and cultural performances filled the night, the 10-year anniversary celebration felt like more than just a corporate milestone—it was a testament to the power of vision, people, and purpose coming together.
Wilo Group’s journey in Ethiopia is a reminder that when technology meets empathy, and engineering is paired with listening, the result is not just infrastructure—but impact.
