African Energy Efficiency Conference

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) has announced that it will host the inaugural African Energy Efficiency Conference (AfEEC) on 10–11 December 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The gathering, organised under the framework of the African Energy Efficiency Alliance launched at COP29, is set to become a flagship continental platform for advancing energy efficiency as a driver of economic growth, sustainable development, and climate resilience.

Specialised training sessions will precede the event on 8–9 December, culminating in the official operationalisation of the African Energy Efficiency Alliance. The new initiative aims to bring together governments, development partners, financiers, private sector players, and civil society to accelerate knowledge exchange, advocacy, and investment in efficiency solutions across Africa.

Modern energy

“Energy efficiency is Africa’s primary resource for sustainable development. It lowers emissions, cuts costs, and drives inclusive growth. This conference will bring together the partnerships, expertise, and funding Africa requires to meet its energy efficiency targets,” said AFREC Executive Director Rashid Ali Abdallah.

The continent faces the pressing challenge of expanding access to modern energy while addressing climate change. Around 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity, and nearly one billion people are without clean cooking solutions. At the same time, population growth, urbanisation, and industrialisation are driving up energy demand.

The AfEEC follows the endorsement of the African Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (AfEES) by the African Union Executive Council earlier this year. The plan outlines more than 100 actions spanning power, industry, transport, buildings, and agriculture, with targets to raise Africa’s energy productivity by 50% by 2050 and 70% by 2063.

The two-day conference will convene African ministers, international partners, business leaders, and technical experts. The programme will feature ministerial panels, technical discussions, an investment forum, as well as technology exhibitions and networking sessions. Organisers expect the event to catalyse partnerships and commitments to accelerate Africa’s transition to a clean energy future. AFREC has called on stakeholders and partners across the energy sector to support the conference and advance efficiency initiatives across the continent.
