Bondoukou, Ivory Coast – AMEA Power has officially broken ground on the highly anticipated 50MW Bondoukou Solar Photovoltaic Project in Ivory Coast, marking a major milestone in the country’s renewable energy development. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by H.E. Sangafowa Coulibaly, Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy of the Republic of Ivory Coast, and David Falcon, Chief Financial Officer of AMEA Power.
The USD 60 million project is being financed by FMO – the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, and DEG – Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft. It will be developed under a ‘build-own-operate and transfer’ (BOOT) model through AMEA Goutougou, a company registered in Ivory Coast and fully owned by AMEA Power.
This project aligns with the Ivorian government’s long-term commitment to diversifying its energy mix and increasing the share of renewables in the national grid. The Bondoukou Solar PV Plant is expected to generate clean energy for thousands of households, reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
Speaking at the groundbreaking event, Minister Sangafowa Coulibaly highlighted the significance of the project in achieving Ivory Coast’s renewable energy goals. “The Bondoukou Solar Project is a crucial step in our nation’s energy transition. We are committed to harnessing the potential of renewable energy to ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply for our people.”
David Falcon, CFO of AMEA Power, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the company’s dedication to expanding clean energy solutions across Africa. “We are proud to be part of Ivory Coast’s journey towards a greener future. This project is a testament to our commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions that drive economic development and energy security.”
The Bondoukou Solar PV Project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase, providing employment opportunities for local communities and fostering skills development in the renewable energy sector. Once operational, the facility will significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, reinforcing Ivory Coast’s pledge to climate action and sustainable development.
With a growing portfolio of renewable energy projects across Africa, AMEA Power continues to play a pivotal role in advancing clean energy initiatives and supporting countries in their energy transition. The successful implementation of the Bondoukou Solar Project will serve as a model for future investments in the region, paving the way for more large-scale renewable energy projects in West Africa.
Construction of the solar plant is set to progress rapidly, with commissioning expected in the coming months. Upon completion, the facility will provide clean, affordable, and reliable electricity, reinforcing Ivory Coast’s position as a regional leader in renewable energy development.
