Bondoukou photovoltaic solar power plant in Ivory Coast set for construction

The government of Ivory Coast has approved the concession agreement for the construction of the Bondoukou photovoltaic solar power plant.

This project is a public-private partnership (PPP) in which the concessionaire will be responsible for developing, financing, building, and operating the solar power plant. The concession contract for the construction of the Bondoukou solar power plant was signed by independent power producer (IPP) Amea Power during the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Week in January 2023.

As part of the agreement, Amea Power also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Ivorian Electricity Company (CIE) for the sale of the plant’s output over a period of 25 years.

Bondoukou solar power plant

The Bondoukou solar power plant will be located in the Gontougo region of Ivory Coast, approximately 420 km northeast of Abidjan, the economic capital. It will cover an 85-hectare site and have the capacity to inject 87,100 MWh of electricity into the national grid annually.

The construction of the Bondoukou photovoltaic solar power plant requires an investment of 37 billion CFA francs, equivalent to just over 56 million euros. The plant is expected to commence commercial operations in 15 months from the date of the concession agreement approval. This project aims to promote private sector participation in the development of Ivory Coast’s electricity sector and meet the increasing demand for electricity in the country.
