BP inks JDA for green hydrogen project in Egypt

BP has joined a consortium with Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Infinity Power under a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to explore a multi-phase green hydrogen (gH2) project in Egypt.

The consortium signed a Framework Agreement (FWA) with the Egyptian government at the Egypt-EU Investment Conference, attended by high-level officials including Egypt’s Prime Minister and ministers of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and Planning and Economic Development. Key signatories included BP’s Regional President Nader Zaki, Hassan Allam Utilities’ COO Karim Hefzy, Masdar’s Andreas Bieringer, and Infinity Power’s Chairman Mohamed Ismail Mansour.

Global decarbonization

BP will lead the project’s development and operation, focusing on consolidating existing gH2 projects and exploring large-scale initiatives with export potential. This project aims to position Egypt as a leader in the global green hydrogen sector, supported by the consortium’s collective expertise and collaborative efforts. The initiative aligns with Egypt’s energy transition plans and aims to boost green industry and economic opportunities, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.

Nader Zaki highlighted the signing as a milestone coinciding with BP’s 60-year presence in Egypt, emphasizing their commitment to supporting Egypt’s sustainable energy future. Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Masdar’s Chief Green Hydrogen Officer, reinforced the UAE’s support for Egypt’s clean energy goals.

Amr Allam, Co-CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, stressed the importance of the consortium’s collaboration for Egypt’s role in green hydrogen development. Felipe Arbelaez, BP’s SVP Hydrogen and CCS, underscored the global potential of hydrogen and BP’s commitment to Egypt’s hydrogen initiatives.

Mohamed Ismail Mansour emphasized the consortium’s ambition in fostering green investments in Africa, leveraging Egypt’s renewable resources. Nayer Fouad, CEO of Infinity Power, highlighted the project’s role in boosting green industry and reinforcing Egypt’s leadership in green power.
