Egypt, Algeria ink oil agreements to boost energy security

Egypt and Algeria have signed two energy cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening petroleum trade, supply security and broader bilateral collaboration in the hydrocarbons sector.

Under a new memorandum of understanding between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Sonatrach, Egypt will establish a framework for purchasing Algerian crude oil to support domestic demand and improve the resilience and flexibility of its petroleum supply chain. The agreement was signed during a ceremony attended by Karim Badawi and Mohamed Arkab.

Strategic energy partnership

Speaking at the event, Badawi said the deal reflects the strong historic relationship between Egypt and Algeria and marks a significant step toward deeper regional integration in the petroleum sector. In parallel discussions, the two ministers explored opportunities to expand cooperation in oil refining, hydrocarbons development and energy investments. They also reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening their strategic energy partnership under the leadership of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

According to Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Algeria produces close to one million barrels of oil per day, making it one of Africa’s leading hydrocarbon producers. The latest agreements are expected to reinforce regional energy cooperation while helping Egypt diversify crude supply sources and enhance energy security.
