Egypt to construct 10 GW wind farm

The government of Egypt has announced plans to construct a 10,000 MW wind farm in the western governorate of Suhag.

A consortium of Masdar, Infinity Power (a joint venture with Infinity Energy), and Hassan Allam Utilities have been tasked with the project devolvement that will span 3,025 km².The consortium will conduct extensive studies, including wind resource assessments, geotechnical and topographical analyses, and environmental impact evaluations. These studies are critical for ensuring minimal environmental impact and progressing to the construction phase.

Energy transition

This project is expected to be a cornerstone in Egypt’s energy transition, with an investment of approximately US $10bn—equivalent to Mauritania’s GDP in 2022.  It aligns with the country’s goal to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix from 7% in 2023 to 42% by 2030.

The wind farm is set to produce 47,790 GWh of electricity annually and will reduce carbon emissions by 23.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year. The project could also save Egypt around $5 billion annually in natural gas costs.
