Chinese technology firm Huawei has unveiled an inverter to boost solar uptake in Kenya. Du Peng, chief executive officer of Huawei Digital Power Eastern Africa Region performed the launch ceremony during the Huawei FusionSolar Eastern Africa Partner Summit 2024 in Nairobi.
The dubbed 150K series commercial and industry inverter is designed to enhance solar panel efficiency by minimizing system losses, making it highly suitable for commercial and industrial applications. The device also offers enhanced safety features through real-time detection of software and hardware faults.
Solar energy production has faced several safety and operational challenges, including high voltage, environmental conditions like extreme temperatures, and operational issues such as dust accumulation or bird droppings on panels. These factors can lead to inverter failures, which contribute significantly to downtime and energy losses.

Nick Lusson, Vice President of Huawei Digital Power in Eastern Africa, emphasizes the importance of advanced inverters like the 150K series in addressing these challenges. According to Lusson, these inverters come equipped with features that enhance safety and reliability. For instance, the 150K series includes a temperature detection feature, which helps prevent overheating and other temperature-related issues. Additionally, these inverters are waterproof, making them more resilient in harsh environmental conditions.
Lusson also highlights the higher energy yield provided by these advanced inverters, which can improve the overall efficiency of solar power systems. Moreover, the 150K series is compatible with the latest solar industry equipment, ensuring that users can integrate them into modern solar energy setups effectively. Kenya currently has an installed electricity capacity of 3,112 MW, with solar energy contributing 210 MW.
