Nigeria, China ink deal for mini-grid simulation and standardization centre

The government of Nigeria has sealed a deal with China for the development of a world-class mini-grid simulation and technical standardization centre.

This initiative, secured during the President’s visit to China, will aid in standardizing the projects managed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) across Nigeria, contributing to the nation’s goals of localizing the energy value chain.

The center will be equipped with advanced laboratories capable of simulating various environmental conditions, including extreme weather, to test the durability and efficiency of renewable energy systems. This will not only ensure the efficient deployment of REA projects but also safeguard renewable energy investments by enhancing the quality and standards of equipment used nationwide.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of this standardization for supporting Nigeria’s ambitions in the renewable energy sector. The center is expected to boost Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s renewable energy space and support the export of locally produced technologies. Additionally, it aligns with the country’s broader goals of industrialization and economic growth by reducing dependency on imports, increasing domestic capacity, and enhancing competitiveness in the global market.

The agreement, signed by REA Managing Director/CEO Abba Aliyu and Huawei Nigeria’s Director Zhilin Ni, highlights the role of strategic partnerships in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition and climate resilience efforts. The center will also serve as a hub for research and development, fostering innovation in renewable energy solutions and contributing to the localization of the energy value chain.
