Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have inked a joint communiqué to advance the Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline (GOGGP) project. The move is a significant step toward regional energy.

The agreement was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development, Antonio Ondo.

This development follows an initial accord between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in August 2024. Minister Ekpo described the project as more than a treaty, calling it a “shared economic vision between two friendly nations,” aimed at enhancing regional energy cooperation, economic development, and industrial growth.

Project implementation

To facilitate implementation, the two countries have agreed to form a Joint Steering Committee and a Sub-Committee on Gas Supply. These bodies will include representatives from both governments and the project developer, Gas Invest Limited/Amitee Global. Their responsibilities include overseeing the formation of holding and pipeline companies, securing gas supply agreements, and finalizing the international project agreement.

The roadmap for the GOGGP also outlines steps such as the ratification of key institutional documents, their deposit with the United Nations, and the creation of inter-agency committees to coordinate national efforts.

Minister Ekpo stressed the importance of transparency, adherence to constitutional processes, and mutual respect throughout the project’s execution. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong commitment to the initiative, describing it not just as a political pact but a “national obligation” with long-term benefits. The Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline project is expected to improve energy access, boost economic ties, and unlock new industrial opportunities for West and Central African nations along the corridor.
