Tono Water Treatment Plant project in Ghana on track

Construction of the Tono Water Treatment Plant project in Ghana is on track. Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr. Amidu Issahaku Chinnia inspected the work alongside the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Stephen Yakubu and affirmed of the project will be completed this year as scheduled.

According to Ms. De Beule the first phase of the Tono Water Treatment Plant project is about 96% complete and it is expected to be fully completed by the end of August 2021, while the second phase is approximately 69% complete and is expected to be entirely completed by the end of October 2021.

The main transmission lines from Navrongo through Bolgatanga, Tindomologo to Paga, a total of 67 kilometers, have been completed and 18 kilometers of distribution lines have been installed under the first phase, in addition to the rehabilitation of an elevated reservoir in Navrongo that has a capacity of 600 cubic meters, and existing reservoirs.

Scope of phase two

Phase two works involves construction of nine kilometers of transmission lines to Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District and its environs and upgrading of the water connection to Bongo with 53 kilometers of distribution lines, an elevated reservoir at Zuarungu with a capacity of 400 cubic meters and the installation of water connections to 4,800 houses.

For the Vea Water Treatment Plant, the project coordinator said that work will begin in October 2021, after the opening of the Tono Plant. This decision was made because if the rehabilitation works of the said facility had started earlier then the people of Bolgatanga would have less water for the entirety of the project.

The project finance which cost more than US $38M is being provided by the Ghanaian government with a loan from Internationale Nederlanden Groep (ING) of Belgium, an international bancassurance financial institution of Dutch origin.
