The Ubeta gas project in Nigeria has been launched. Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and France’s TotalEnergies performed the launch ceremony on the US $550M project.
Ubeta upstream gas project located northwest of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is expected to deliver 350 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d) of natural gas by 2027, equivalent to 3.6 billion cubic meters annually. The gas produced from the Ubeta field will be supplied to the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) plant in Bonny Island, which is currently expanding its liquefaction capacity from 22 to 30 million tons per year (Mt/year).
Ubeta is part of the OML 58 onshore license, operated by TotalEnergies, which already includes the Obagi oil field and the Ibewa gas and condensate field. The OML 58 license is co-owned by NNPC (60%) and TotalEnergies (40%).

Energy reforms
This project aligns with broader energy reforms introduced by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since June 2023, aiming to enhance energy security, attract foreign investments, and strengthen the gas-to-power value chain. These reforms also focus on initiatives such as improving cash flow in electricity distribution, smart metering, and reducing carbon emissions from gas production.
The Ubeta field development is expected to unlock significant investments, with potential for up to $2.5 billion in new oil and gas ventures. The project was highlighted during the inaugural US-Nigeria Strategic Energy Dialogue, hosted by the U.S. State Department, which emphasized shared goals in energy security, decarbonization, and economic growth.
