Works begin on Lobatse Water Supply project in Botswana

Construction works has begun on the Lobatse Water Supply project in Botswana. China Construction Botswana, the project developers made the announcement.

The development is located in the town of Lobatse, 65km south of Gaborone in Botswana. The water project was conceived in 2009 to alleviate water scarcity in the Greater Gaborone zone. Ramotswa, Otse, Mogobane, Mankgodi, Manyana, Goodhope, Lekgolobotlo, Mmathethe, Molapowabojang, and the adjacent villages are among these locations.

The construction includes the construction of a new pump room, the laying of 57 kilometers of 900 mm pipe diameter steel pipes, and the construction of a 16,000 cubic meter concrete reservoir. The pipeline will run along the A1 motorway between Gaborone and Lobatze.

Infrastructure development

Masisi remarked that this infrastructure development will permit big initiatives in the Lobatse region, which are vital to the ailing, ancient town and boost water supplies for home purposes and livelihoods.

Some important prospective projects in Lobatse, such as Lobatse Leather Park, Milk Afric, and the Pioneer Border Gate, are dependent on the project’s performance to take off and run efficiently. Despite the government investing the required cash, the two projects have struggled to get off the ground.

The subsidiary of China State Construction and Engineering Corporation has 12 months to complete the work. The Botswana government estimates that it will take about US $92M to complete the Lobatse drinking water project.

Upon completion, the government-funded development will serve at least nine communities near the Botswana capital. Currently, communities along the A1 highway between Gaborone and Lobatse receive a mere 14,000 m3 of water per day.  The ongoing project will benefit the communities of Ramotswa, Otse, Mogobane, Mankgodi, Manyana, Goodhope, Lekgolobotlo, Mmathethe, Molapowabojang and some surrounding villages.
