Kenya launches tender for drinking water supply system

The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) in Kenya has launched a tender to construct a drinking water supply system, known as the Mwala Cluster, in the semi-arid locality of Mwala in Machakos County.

Improving water supply 

The project which is part of the Kenya Sustainable Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (KTSWSSP), aims to improve the supply of drinking water in Mwala and will benefit around 100,000 people. The system will consist of a water treatment plant in the Munyu area, 56 km from the town of Mwala, which will be supplied by the Ndarugu River.

The water plant with an expected capacity of 6,600 m3 per day will be feature a dam equipped with a 1.65 m high reinforced concrete weir. Drinking water from the Munyu plant will be transported via 120 km of pipes to the reservoirs.

Interested companies have until 2 June 2023 to apply. The selected one will receive US $3.9M to carry out the project. At least 28 sub-projects will be implemented under the KTSWSSP to improve water supply and wastewater management in several Kenyan cities. The programme will also strengthen people’s resilience to drought.
