Kenya to host Africa wind energy forum in June

Kenya is set to host the Africa Energy Forum next month. The event aims to bring together renewable energy players, banks, regulators, and other stakeholders from around the world to promote the generation of wind power as a crucial component of clean energy in Africa.

The forum will address various challenges, including financing and regulations, with the goal of increasing the use of wind energy on the continent. Slated for June 20 to 23, Africa Energy Forum in Nairobi will provide a platform for engaging with public and private sector stakeholders to explore the opportunities associated with wind energy.

Africa Energy Forum

GWEC’s Africa WindPower, a division of the Global Wind Energy Council, will collaborate with UK-based events firm EnergyNet to jointly host the forum. Kenya, with the largest wind power plant in Africa, the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, along with three other wind power plants, has been chosen as the host country for the forum.

The forum anticipates the participation of around 2,500 players from private and government agencies within the sector. The event aims to facilitate the formation of deals and partnerships to secure funding for wind power projects across the continent. Furthermore, the forum will focus on engaging young entrepreneurs and higher education institutions to harness Africa’s youthful population and promote the adoption of green energy.

Africa possesses significant potential for wind energy production, attracting the interest of international financial institutions, governments, and the private sector. These entities are seeking partnerships to leverage this potential and improve electricity access for homes and businesses in Africa. Currently, only a small percentage (one percent) of the world’s wind farms are located in Africa due to funding challenges that have hindered the development of such projects.
