NamWater launches tenders for Oshakati drinking water plant

The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) has issued a call for tenders for the construction of a new drinking water treatment plant in Oshakati.

Project Details

The new drinking water treatment plant aims to support the existing water supply infrastructure in Oshakati and improve water availability in the region. The winning company will be responsible for constructing a drinking water treatment plant with a production capacity of 50,000 m3 per day.

This new capacity will complement the existing plant, which produces 40,000 m3 per day. With the completion of the new plant, Oshakati’s total production capacity will increase to 90,000 m3 per day.

The plant will be supplied with water from the Calueque dam in southern Angola via the 150 km Calueque-Oshakati canal. The drinking water produced by the new plant will be used to supply urban centers and rural areas in the Oshana, Ohangwena, and Oshikoto regions.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has allocated more than US$125 million from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative Trust Fund (RWSSI-TF) to the Namibian government to implement the Water Sector Support Programme, which includes the construction of the Oshakati drinking water plant. Interested companies, both local and international, have until 21 August 2023 to submit their bids for the construction project.

Project Impact

The Water Sector Support Programme, funded by the AfDB, aims to provide access to safe drinking water and sanitation services to more than one million people in Namibia. By increasing the water production capacity in Oshakati and enhancing water supply infrastructure, the project is expected to contribute significantly to addressing water scarcity and improving living conditions in the Oshana region and surrounding areas.

The successful implementation of this project will not only provide a reliable source of drinking water but also promote sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
