Rano Maharitra, Dio Sera water projects launched in Madagascar

The Rano Maharitra and Dio Sera water projects have been launched in Madagascar. The projects were launched by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with an aim of improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in the country’s rural and urban areas.

The projects with a budget of US $45M, will be implemented by a consotium led by CARE International, including WaterAid, iDE, and three Madagascan companies (Miarakap, BushProof, and Sandandrano) for Rano Maharitra Project while Dio Sera Project will be led by iDE, including GRET, Practica, WaterAid, Runway, and Sango.

Scope of work

The objective include establishing systematic partnerships with national and regional governments, water and sanitation institutions, communities, private sector entities, civil society organizations (CSOs), and beneficiaries and also train local companies to manage the water systems as part of a public-private partnership (PPP).

The projects targets Vatovavy, Fitovinany, Sofia, Betsiboka, Anosy, Androy, and Atsimo Atsinanana Urban and peri-urban areas in Mahajanga, Toamasina, and Fianarantsoa, benefiting over 900,000 people. Rano Maharitra focuses on rural areas, while Dio Sera targets urban and peri-urban areas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to enhancing water and sanitation infrastructure across different regions of the country.

More than 742,000 people thanks to the “Rano Maharitra”, 312,000 of whom will have access to drinking water. These systems will be managed by local companies trained by the project as part of a public-private partnership (PPP). The Dio Sera project will enable 175,000 people to benefit from a basic sanitation service, managed in complete safety.
