US $1.6M Green ammonia project launched in Egypt

A US $1.6M green ammonia project has been launched in Egypt. The General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), under the leadership of President Hossam Heiba, performed the launch ceremony with an aim to Egypt’s role in renewable energy.

The project is set to produce 400,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with a future production capacity increase to 1 million tons per year. Powered by Egypt’s solar and wind resources, the plant will use electrolysis-based green hydrogen production, eliminating fossil fuel dependency. Hydrogen will combine with nitrogen to create green ammonia.

Any surplus electricity generated from renewable sources will be fed into Egypt’s national grid, enhancing the country’s renewable energy capacity. The entire production will be exported to the European Union, meeting its sustainability targets under long-term agreements. This positions Egypt as a critical supplier in the EU’s strategy to import 6 million tons of green hydrogen and 4 million tons of green ammonia annually by 2030.

Golden license program.

Hynfra will introduce advanced systems in energy storage, green hydrogen production, and water desalination. The project also aligns with Egypt’s Green Hydrogen Production Projects Incentives Law and benefits from the streamlined approval processes under the golden license program.

Egypt is emerging as a hub for green hydrogen and ammonia through initiatives like the creation of the National Council for Green Hydrogen. This plant underscores Egypt’s dedication to leveraging renewable energy for industrial and economic growth.

The partnership supports EU efforts to secure a sustainable energy supply, reinforcing Egypt’s role in addressing global climate goals. President Heiba assured Hynfra of comprehensive support from GAFI, covering all project stages, including; securing permits, identifying optimal locations with access to renewable energy and export infrastructure and monitoring operational developments.
