The third phase works on Ummbila Emoyeni wind cluster project in South Africa has commenced. This follows a financial close reached for the development by renewable energy company Seriti Green, marking a significant advancement in the transition to cleaner power generation in South Africa.

Located in Mpumalanga, a province historically dominated by coal mining, the project is pioneering the region’s shift toward renewable energy. Once fully completed, the wind cluster will deliver more than 900 megawatts (MW) of clean power across seven phases, expanding on Seriti Green’s earlier installations near Davel, Morgenzon, and Bethal.

Each of the first three development stages contributes 155 MW to the total capacity. The first phase achieved financial close in 2024, the second in August 2025, and the latest phase now paves the way for initial energy output expected by early 2026.

Integrated renewable energy complex

Seriti Green’s leadership highlighted that the project demonstrates how regions once dependent on fossil fuels can successfully integrate renewable power generation. They emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts to support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, ensuring that economic growth and environmental responsibility progress together.

Provincial officials have also commended the initiative, describing it as a symbol of transformation for Mpumalanga a province once known primarily for its coal mines, now emerging as a driver of sustainable energy development.

Construction activities have already created 1,200 jobs, with employment projected to increase to around 2,000 workers as work continues. About one-third of the power generated will supply Seriti Green’s mining operations, while the remaining output will be distributed through the NOA Group and the Energy Exchange of South Africa, expanding renewable access for businesses and households nationwide.

Once complete, Ummbila Emoyeni will become South Africa’s largest integrated renewable energy complex, comprising five wind farms, a solar photovoltaic facility, and battery storage infrastructure to ensure stable power supply.

Seriti Green’s legal, environmental, and regulatory advisory services were provided by Bowmans, whose project and infrastructure teams supported the deal through all stages of financial closure and compliance.

The Ummbila Emoyeni development underscores Seriti Green’s broader mission to reduce carbon emissions, create sustainable employment, and help reposition South Africa as a leader in large-scale renewable energy innovation.
