Madkour Holding Group and GoGas Holding have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to build a combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The facility which is expected to play a key role in strengthening energy infrastructure, will be powered by natural gas from the offshore Banda-Tevet gas field, which GoGas Holding is currently developing. Under the project plan, the first phase of the plant is scheduled to start electricity generation by the end of 2028 with an initial output of 200 MW. Future expansion phases are expected to increase the plant’s total capacity to about 365 MW.

Large-scale electricity generation

Once completed, the project will mark Mauritania’s first initiative aimed at converting domestically produced natural gas into large-scale electricity generation for the national market. The development is intended to support the expansion of the country’s power grid and help improve the reliability of electricity supply.

The partners also believe the project could enhance Mauritania’s participation in regional electricity trade through the West African Power Pool (WAPP), which encourages cross-border power exchange and cooperation among countries in the region. The agreement was signed by Adham Alkady, Chief Executive Officer of Madkour Holding, and Heba Ayad during a ceremony attended by several industry figures. Among those present were Tarek El Molla, chairman of GoGas Holding and former Egyptian minister of petroleum and mineral resources, along with Mostafa Madkour, Khaled Abu Bakr, and Tawfik Diab.

During the event, Mostafa Madkour presented a Strategic Partnership Trophy to Tarek El Molla and Khaled Abu Bakr in recognition of their role in advancing energy cooperation and industrial collaboration across Africa. Speaking at the ceremony, Tarek El Molla said the partnership represents an important step toward strengthening regional energy integration by transforming Mauritania’s natural gas resources into reliable electricity for domestic consumption and the wider West African market.

Mostafa Madkour noted that the initiative highlights the company’s commitment to working with African governments to deliver long-term energy infrastructure that can support both economic growth and social development. Khaled Abu Bakr added that the collaboration reflects the increasing role of Egyptian industrial partnerships across the continent and aims to deliver advanced solutions for turning natural gas resources into sustainable power generation. Adham Alkady said the agreement marks a significant milestone in Madkour Holding’s expansion strategy in West Africa, emphasizing the group’s focus on providing dependable, efficient, and environmentally responsible energy solutions aligned with global standards.
