Mombasa Kenya to benefit from US $1.5m water project

Mombasa County in Kenya is set to benefit from a water project worth US $1.5m. Engineer Abdulrahim Kheri of Coast Water Works Development Agency, the project developers revealed.

Eng. Kheri stated that the project will increase supply of water to the proposed Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone Phase 1 by 3000 cubic metres per day and ultimately raise to 10,500 cubic metres per day.

The million dollar project is being funded by the national government through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation. It involves construction of water distribution ferrous pipeline and its main source will be Tiwi boreholes, Marere and Mzima pipelines. Works began in 2019 and is currently 80%.

Dongo Kundu SEZ

The project will also benefit the residents of Kwale County. Meanwhile the Coast Water Works Development Agency is also undertaking construction of Changamwe Repooling Sewer Network at a cost of Sh 204million. The project under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Program will connect about 10,000 households and help to protect the environment.

The Dongo Kundu SEZ industrial and commercial hub project is a part of a master plan for the development of the Mombasa SEZ that was conceived four years ago. It is designed to be a multi-sectoral zone comprises of Industrial Parks, Free Trade Zones/Free Port, Dongo Kundu Port, Tourism Zone (MICE), Business Service Parks and Commercial and Residential Zone.

The US $386m project is expected to unlock more than 60,000 jobs in Mombasa, the coastal city of Kenya. It is expected to be executed in phases on a 1,326 hectares piece of land with the first phase projected to be ready by June 2022.
