The pipeline is being developed on a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis under public-private partnership (PPP), supervised by Nigeria’s Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and executed in three phases.

The first phase covers a distance of 200 kilometers between Ajaokuta and Abuja, while the second and the third phases cover a distance of 193 kilometers and 221 kilometers, from Abuja to Kaduna, and from Kaduna to Kano respectively.

The project is anticipated to have positive effects on power generation, industrial development, and job creation within the country. The Minister of State, Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, highlighted the project’s significance in diversifying the country’s energy mix, reducing reliance on imported gas, and creating job opportunities. The funding for the AKK gas pipeline project involves the NNPC and a consortium of international lenders, with the completion targeted for July 2024.
