The Arsenal solar power plant in Mauritius has been inaugurated. Minister Georges Pierre Lesjongard at the inauguration ceremony said the project marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards sustainable energy.
Minister Georges Pierre Lesjongard emphasizes the role the project plays noting that. With ambitious goals of reaching 35% of electricity from renewable sources by 2025 and 60% by 2030, projects like the Arsenal plant play a crucial role in this transition.

Diversification of energy
Developed by the French company GreenYellow, the 14 MWp plant adds clean energy to Mauritius’ installed capacity, capable of supplying electricity to thousands of homes annually. The support from local players, such as the Commercial Bank of Mauritius (MCB), further underscores the commitment to decarbonizing the country’s electricity supply. The MCB’s financing of the project demonstrates the financial sector’s involvement in advancing sustainable energy initiatives.
The energy mix in Mauritius is dominated by coal and oil. Almost 10% of the country’s final energy consumption is generated by modern renewable sources of energy – a share that has gradually decreased for the past 20 years.
The energy transition is poised to continue with the construction of additional solar power plants. The Central Electricity Board (CEB) has entrusted the French company Qair with the development of four “Stor’Sun (SS)” solar power plants, equipped with battery-based electricity storage systems. This investment reflects a commitment to enhancing renewable energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on thermal power stations fueled by oil and coal.
