The government of Burundi has secured a loan of US $13M from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the Water Sector and Climate Resilience Support Project (PASEREC).
The loan was made possible by the Transition Support Facility (TSF), an African Development Bank (AfDB) financing instrument specifically designed for countries in transition. PASEREC aims to improve access to safe drinking water, sustainable sanitation, and climate-resilient hygiene services for over 1.27 million citizens.

PASEREC
In the first phase of PASEREC, several key activities will be undertaken, including the construction of 18 solar-powered water supply systems in various provinces, the building of more than 750 latrines and hand-washing facilities, and raising awareness among more than 315,000 people about the importance of good hygiene practices. The first phase will also establish 4,500 individual water connections to households. Work on this first phase is scheduled to commence in January 2024.
The project will support the development of climate-resilient drinking water supply and sanitation investment projects in the provinces of Gitega, Mwaro, and Kayanza. Additionally, it will prepare an investment plan that includes technical studies and environmental and social impact assessments necessary for evaluating the potential second phase of the program.
The PASEREC project recognizes the challenges posed by climate change, such as extreme water-related events, which can affect water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. It aims to enhance resilience against these challenges.
