Dangote oil refinery construction nears completion

Construction of the Dangote oil refinery in Nigeria is nearing completion. Members of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) recently paid at the site and revealed that the project is at 97%.

Dangote refinery is located at Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, Nigeria and covers an area of 250,000 hectares. The Pipeline Infrastructure at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is the largest in the world, with 1,100 kilometers to handle 3 Billion Standard Cubic Foot of gas per day. The Refinery alone has a 400MW Power Plant that is able to meet the total power requirement of Ibadan DisCo.

Reduce its reliance on imports

Mammoet was contracted to assist in the construction of the refinery in 2018. The scope consisted of receiving, inland transport, on site lifting and installation of hundreds of refinery components. To optimize the construction process and schedule and ensure the highest levels of construction uptime, the firm drawn on its diverse fleet of heavy lifting and transport equipment. This has included conventional trailers and trucks, SPMTs, plus mobile and crawler cranes ranging in capacity from 250t to 1,600t.

The 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) integrated refinery and petrochemical project once on stream will increase the country’s oil exports and reduce its reliance on imports of petroleum products, thereby boosting economic growth in Nigeria and generating thousands of jobs. The country currently imports most of its refined petroleum due to a lack of domestic refining capacity.

“The high volume of petrol output from the refinery would transform Nigeria from a petrol import-dependent country to an exporter of refined petroleum products. The refinery would produce Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, kerosene and poly-propylene for local consumption and also have a surplus of each of the products for export,” said the Group Executive Director, Strategy, Portfolio Development & Capital Projects, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin.
