DRC set to develop phase one of Green Giant project

The Green Giant project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is set for phase one development. Solar developer SkyPower Global has inked a Joint Development Agreement with Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to kick of construction works.

The Green Giant project is a solar energy project under pursuit of sustainable energy solutions in the country. All necessary approvals for the initial phase of the Green Giant project have been obtained, and the land allocation process has been completed, setting the stage for construction activities to commence by 2025.

The 200MW Phase 1 is a crucial step in realising the landmark 1,000MW Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between SkyPower and the DRC’s state-owned utility, Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL).

“Partnering with SkyPower, an institution known for their decades of global expertise in large-scale solar projects, is well aligned with our mission to advance energy access on the continent through renewable energy. Through this collaboration, we aim to contribute significantly to rapid industrialisation, local job creation, sustainable economic growth and a pragmatic transition to net zero in DRC and Africa as a whole,” said Amadou Wadda, Senior Director of Project Development and Technical Solutions at Africa Finance Corporation (AFC).

The DRC has an immense and varied energy potential, consisting of non-renewable resources, including oil, natural gas, and uranium, as well as renewable energy sources, including hydroelectric, biomass, solar, wind, and geothermal power. The country has ambitious plans to scale up access to energy, further increase its renewable energy generation and to implement Sustainable Energy for All.
