The government of Ethiopia and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) have held talks on advancing the country’s solar energy power ambitions. The meeting, attended by a high-level ISA delegation, including the Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Mr. Ashish Khanna and Ethiopia’s State Minister for Water and Energy, H.E. Dr. Eng. Sultan Woli, took place in Addis Ababa and explored opportunities for deepening financial and technological cooperation.
Discussions centred on Ethiopia’s flagship solar initiatives, including the planned 400 MW solar park, a 700 kW solar mini-grid, and the rollout of solar-powered water pumps for both irrigation and drinking water supply. These projects form part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to boost renewable energy adoption, expand rural electrification, and enhance climate resilience.

Value of global partnerships
Mr. Khanna underscored the value of global partnerships in accelerating solar deployment, noting that ISA’s expertise in funding mechanisms and advanced technology could help Ethiopia meet its clean energy targets faster.
Dr. Woli reaffirmed the government’s commitment to renewable energy expansion, describing the solar projects as vital for agricultural productivity and sustainable development. By pursuing these initiatives, Ethiopia aims to reshape its energy landscape and reinforce its position as a regional leader in sustainable growth.
