The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity has launched call for entries in its annual competition.
The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, administered by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation based in Lisbon, Portugal, is an annual award focusing on promoting climate innovation and resilience initiatives worldwide.
The prize offers US $1M and focuses on initiatives that strengthen the climate resilience of local communities across the globe. Individuals, start-ups, local authorities, and civil society organizations (CSOs) from all over the world, including Africa, are eligible to apply.

Submission
The deadline for submissions for the fifth call for entries is 2nd February 2024. Entries must demonstrate a concrete impact on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in addressing climate ambitions at both national and global levels. The jury places particular emphasis on mobilizing young people, scientific research, and leadership in ecosystem restoration.
Angela Merkel, the former Chancellor of Germany, serves as the chair of the jury for the Gulbenkian Prize. She emphasizes the importance of exemplary action in climate change mitigation, highlighting the necessity of placing people at the heart of such efforts.
The 2022 winners were a trio of environmental activists: Cécile Bibiane Ndjebet from Cameroon, Lélia Wanick Salgado from Brazil, and Apai Janggut from Indonesia. In 2021, the prize was awarded to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) at the 26th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.
