The Danish Energy Agency, in partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, has unveiled the Kenya-Denmark Energy Partnership (KENDEP)—a transformative five-year program aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and advancing industrial electrification in Kenya. This collaboration signifies a critical step toward addressing energy-related challenges while bolstering Kenya’s sustainable development goals.
Fostering Collaboration Between Stakeholders
As part of the program’s initial activities, a delegation from the Embassy of Denmark visited the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Secretariat for a strategic dialogue. The delegation, which included Mr. Stephan Karl, Henrik Adler, and Carl-Christian, met with KAM Chief Executive Tobias Alando and other key representatives such as Joyce Njogu, Head of Consulting and Sustainability, Sylvester Makaka, Energy Expert, and Dennis Kariuki, Manager at the Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (CEEC).
This meeting aimed to delve into the challenges and opportunities facing Kenya’s industrial sector in energy efficiency and explore collaborative solutions through KENDEP.
Key Areas of Focus Under KENDEP
1. Energy Efficiency and Industrial Electrification
A core component of KENDEP is enhancing industrial energy efficiency and supporting electrification. The program seeks to:
- Benchmark energy use across sectors.
- Analyze energy demand drivers to optimize energy consumption.

KAM’s Role in Advancing Energy Efficiency
KAM has been at the forefront of energy efficiency advocacy and implementation through its Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (CEEC), a public-private partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum established in 2006.
Key achievements include:
- Energy Audits: Conducting over 1,800 audits to identify efficiency opportunities in industries.
- Capacity Building: Training over 2,000 industry professionals on energy management.
- Flagship Events: Organizing significant initiatives like the Clean Energy Expo and Conference and the Energy Management Awards.
- Policy Advocacy: Collaborating with the government to develop policies promoting rational energy use and decarbonization.
Challenges Facing Kenya’s Industrial Energy Landscape
Despite KAM’s efforts and achievements, several challenges hinder the full realization of energy efficiency in Kenya’s industrial sector:
