The Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency has developed a water resources master plan to increase supply and sanitation access in Kisumu county.
The plan upon, in which all water infrastructure expansion projects in the area have been anchored, targets to expand the piped water network and sewerage system in Kisumu satellite towns by the year 2050.
According to the agency’s chief executive Chrispine Juma, a Sh7.8 billion loan has been secured from the French Development Agency for the project.
“The water resource master plan will provide a solution for sustainable water supply for domestic use in Kisumu,” Juma said.

Speaking at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu during a public participation workshop on the proposed plan, Juma said the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Programme will to address gaps in water supply and sanitation in the area.
Through the project, the agency targets to increase water supply from the current 67 per cent to 90 per cent by extending and rehabilitating existing networks.
Sewerage coverage which currently stands at 16 per cent will also be increased to 45 per cent to reduce pollution of rivers and Lake Victoria.
Head of the project’s technical team Eng Paul Agwanda said a 107km water distribution network will be constructed in Kisumu City extending to satellite towns of Maseno and Kiboswa.
Additionally, he said a 70km sewerage network will be constructed in the city alongside a new treatment plant and collection system at Otonglo.
At the same time, Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company will receive technical support to reduce non-revenue water from the current 45 per cent to 20 per cent.
