In a collaborative effort, residents, local companies, the Nama Khoi Municipality, and KSB Pumps and Valves (Pty) Ltd. came together to restore water access to areas within the Nama Khoi region, bringing much-needed relief to affected residents.
South Africa’s water infrastructure is increasingly strained due to aging systems, environmental challenges, and budget limitations. The Northern Cape municipality, facing difficulties with pump repairs, benefitted from the support of KSB Pumps and Valves. The company, a leading supplier of pumps and water infrastructure equipment, addressed the issue by donating an Etanorm pump to aid the Nama Khoi Municipality.
Andre Jonker, manager of KSB Pumps and Valves’ Upington branch, explained that the donation was part of a larger project to restore the Overberg potable water pump station. A pump failure had nearly halted the station, leaving only one pump that struggled to operate at capacity, resulting in water shortages.
The Etanorm pump, KSB’s flagship model, is recognized for its efficiency, durability, and versatility in various applications, including potable water supply. Its high efficiency supports both longevity and energy savings, making it a beneficial solution for municipalities nationwide.
“The pump donation not only reinstated water services but provided a more energy-efficient and sustainable solution for the community,” said Jonker. “This collaborative effort shows the impact that partnerships between local businesses and municipal authorities can have. Various companies and experts, including municipal specialists, combined their time, resources, and expertise to bring the pump station back to full operation at no charge.”
After services were restored, Mayor Rodney Kritzinger expressed gratitude, noting that the collaborative work saved the municipality significant expenses. “On behalf of the residents, we extend heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed to saving almost R1 million in the process of restoring the Overberg pump station,” he said.
Special acknowledgments were given to key contributors, including:
- Abri van Niekerk and Tiaan van den Heever from Novatec, who provided and installed a new panel.
- Thinus van Schalkwyk and the Copper 360 team for axle repairs and a new impeller.
- Kobus Zandberg for his organizational support.
- Nico Moore of Springbok Motor Rewinds for rebuilding essential components.
- Andre Jonker, Martin Fourie, and the management team from KSB Pumps and Valves for the vital Etanorm pump donation.
Jonker noted that the restoration project exemplifies how public-private partnerships can effectively tackle infrastructure challenges across South Africa. This initiative addressed an immediate need and highlighted the necessity of sustainable solutions to South Africa’s water infrastructure challenges. “KSB Pumps and Valves is honored to continue playing a crucial role in safeguarding South Africa’s water resources,” he added.
