Namibia’s Neckartal dam ready to harvest water

The 80 metres high Namibia’s Neckartal dam, is now ready to harvest and store water in its reservoir capable of holding 857 million cubic meters of water.

Fabrizio Lazzarin, project manager of Salini Impregilo SpA – the Italian firm constructing the dam, made the statement during a site visit by the Namibian government officials.

The US$205million project located south of Namibia in the Karas region is the first phase of the Neckartal Irrigation Scheme and is set for completion in mid-July. The dam was expected to have been completed within 36 months from September 2013.

The dam will harness water from the Fish River to produce energy and irrigate about 5,000 hectares of land for the agricultural development of the area. An intake structure, a crossing and a pumping station will be built 13 km downstream from the dam and water will be pumped through an 8.7 km steel pipe to a reservoir that is also part of the project.
