Niger State has announced plans to revive the 53 Biwater Schemes. The project aligns with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s commitment to providing potable water for the people.
The on-the-spot assessment of Biwater schemes, particularly in Farin Doki, Lambata, Gulu, Takuti, and Kutirko, revealed the dire state of neglect, disrepair, and decay of the schemes, some of which have been non-operational for close to 15 years. This underscores the urgency of the revitalization efforts.

53 Biwater Schemes
Built under Colonel Ibrahim Lawal’s leadership 44 years ago, these schemes have the potential to bring much-needed relief to local communities grappling with water supply challenges. The collaboration between the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Ministry of Water Resources and Dam Development, and other relevant agencies illustrates a positive step towards the project. Pooling resources and expertise from different departments can enhance the effectiveness of the revitalization process.
The commitment to fund projects across all three senatorial zones and openness to collaboration with development partners is crucial for the success of such large-scale initiatives. It not only distributes the benefits of the projects widely but also leverages external expertise and resources to ensure a more comprehensive and sustainable solution to the water challenges. The Niger State Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Agency underscores that revamping the system could benefit approximately 800 persons.
