The governments of Nigeria and Egypt have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in water resources management.
The Nigerian Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, and the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, formalized the agreement, focusing on areas crucial for sustainable water development in both nations.

Scope of MoU
The MoU outlines joint efforts in irrigation infrastructure, flood management, drought forecasting, and the use of innovative water harvesting technologies. Both nations will also focus on controlling aquatic weeds, improving groundwater management, and enhancing water quality monitoring, particularly through bio-monitoring. Additionally, the partnership addresses climate change adaptation and its effects on water security and food production.
This agreement holds promise for Nigeria, with potential benefits like boosting irrigation farming, increasing food security, and enhancing hydropower generation. Egypt, renowned for its expertise in water management, aims to share knowledge and collaborate with African countries on tackling water challenges and mitigating the impact of climate change. The MoU also aligns with the goals of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW).
