Nigeria launches new water pumps in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has launched the installation of new water pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Intakes in a move aimed at increasing water production and improving the reliability of potable water supply across the state.

The infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance raw water abstraction and boost the operational efficiency of the Lagos Water Corporation, enabling the utility to provide a more dependable and consistent supply of treated water to homes, businesses and public institutions.

The state government said the project is part of its ongoing investment in water infrastructure under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The initiative is intended to strengthen service delivery, address the growing demand for water driven by Lagos’ expanding population, and improve access to safe drinking water.

Challenges and resolutions

Officials noted that the installation of the new pumps forms part of a wider strategy to modernise the state’s water infrastructure and enhance the long-term sustainability of its public water system. The upgrades are expected to improve distribution capacity while supporting efforts to deliver reliable water services to communities across Lagos.

Lagos faces a combination of infrastructure, population growth and environmental challenges that continue to limit access to reliable and safe water. The Lagos Water Corporation has also faced persistent challenges, including ageing pipelines, ageing treatment facilities and high levels of non-revenue water caused by leakages, illegal connections and faulty metering. These issues have reduced the efficiency of the state’s water distribution network and limited the utility’s ability to provide a reliable supply of potable water.

The state government has stepped up efforts to improve water security through infrastructure upgrades, rehabilitation of existing facilities and the installation of new equipment, including pumps at key waterworks. These investments form part of a broader strategy to expand production capacity, modernise the distribution network and improve access to clean and safe water for households and businesses across Lagos.
