The facility forms the centrepiece of Talbot’s new Industrial Water Security Hub. Spanning 3,500 square metres, the hub houses the expanded laboratory alongside research and development space and a Smart Water Control Centre.
Talbot officially opened the site on 20 March 2026. More than 150 partners, clients, and industry leaders attended the launch. Guests toured the new SANAS-accredited laboratory, watched a panel discussion, and heard from Talbot’s leadership team.
The timing was deliberate. The opening coincided with South Africa’s National Water Month, spotlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management across the continent.
Accreditation That Africa’s Industries Can Trust
The laboratory holds ISO/IEC 17025 SANAS accreditation. This certification confirms that test results are accurate, traceable, and recognised internationally. According to Talbot director Micole Martens, the new SANAS-accredited laboratory significantly expands the company’s testing capacity.
The facility offers more than 250 individually accredited tests. These cover water, wastewater, soil, sludge, and sediment matrices. The lab also houses an LC-MS instrument, enabling testing for emerging contaminants of concern such as PFAS, dioxins, furans, and pharmaceuticals. These testing capabilities are not yet available commercially elsewhere in South Africa.
For industrial clients, accredited data is not optional. Regulators, insurers, and investors increasingly demand it. A SANAS-accredited laboratory gives operators defensible evidence for compliance audits and environmental reporting.

The move follows Talbot outgrowing its long-standing Pietermaritzburg headquarters. That site remains operational until July, after which Dube TradePort becomes Talbot’s primary base.
