Sierra Leone is set to have its first wind farm. This follows a partnership inked between Octopus Energy‘s generation arm and Sherbro Alliance Partners (SAP), a development company co-founded by Idris Elba and Siaka Stevens.
The collaboration aims to accelerate Sierra Leone’s renewable energy initiatives and gather crucial data to attract more investments in green energy. The project, scheduled for 2024, will involve the construction of up to five wind turbines and solar panels with batteries to generate clean electricity for local communities.
The deal has the potential to expand in the future, indicating a long-term commitment to fostering renewable energy in Sierra Leone. The partners are exploring options for the location of the project on Sherbro Island.

The project is expected to create green job opportunities and provide training for local people, contributing to sustainable economic development on Sherbro Island. Sherbro Island is designated as a semi-autonomous Special Economic Zone, and SAP aims to transform it into a vibrant West African economic hub and dynamic eco-city. The vision includes efficient governance, robust infrastructure, high-speed connectivity, healthcare, education, arts, film, entertainment, business, and talent development.
Octopus Energy, with a portfolio of green energy projects worth US $7.5billion spanning over 15 countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia, is making its first move into renewables in Africa through this partnership. Approximately 28% of Sierra Leone’s population is estimated to have access to electricity. The country aims to achieve 85% renewable electricity capacity by 2030, emphasizing the potential impact of scaling clean and affordable energy to a larger population.
The partnership involves the opening of offices in Sierra Leone by both SAP and Octopus Energy, showcasing a commitment to local presence and collaboration on the ground. Idris Elba and Siaka Stevens express their vision for Sherbro Island City, aiming to create a culturally diverse international city with a blend of African tradition, modern infrastructure, and sustainability.
